Playing some of the toughest competition in Northwest Iowa, the Newell-Fonda volleyball team lost three matches in three tries here Saturday at the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Tournament.
"We went 0-3 today," said Newell-Fonda coach Craig Davis. "But playing against teams like this will make us stronger when tournament play starts."
The Lady Mustangs opened with a 2-0 loss to Class 4A Sioux City West before losing to Class 1A power Laurens-Marathon 2-1. In the finale, Newell-Fonda lost to Okoboji, ranked 15th in Class 2A.
With the three losses, Newell-Fonda dropped to 8-7 on the season in matches and to 24-21 in games.
Statistically for the Mustangs, Destiny Sievers finished with 15 of 16 serving on the day, 17 set assists and 12 digs.
Kristen Culp added 13 digs and nine kills, while Jennifer Schumann added eight kills, three blocks and was eight of eight in serving. Also, Tiffany Parker had a strong defensive game with 12 digs and three kills.
Hanna Reis was 13 of 13 from the service line while senior middle hitter Andrea Larsen had 12 kills, 11 digs, three blocks and was 11 of 12 from the service line.
Kalee Kier was eight of nine from the service line with nine digs and one kill, Samantha Schaffer had three digs, three kills and two blocks while Tanya Brown was nine of nine from the line with four ace serves and four digs.
