SLHS girls show improvement
Spirit Lake's Caedryn Schrunk just keeps getting better and better.
Schrunk, a junior, beat 109 other runners here Thursday afternoon at the Storm Lake Invitational at the SL Municipal golf course, finishing the 4-kilometer course with a time of 14 minutes, 50 seconds.
Schrunk also was the top varsity finisher at the Storm Lake Invitational last fall.
Spencer's Aly Altenhofen was second overall in 15:02 while Sioux City North's Sarah Nelson was third in 15:10.
The top area finisher was Sioux Central's Robyn Daly, who medaled by taking 30th in 17:17. Alta's Dee Hinkeldey was next, taking 40th in 17:50.
Sioux City North took first in the team competition in the varsity race, taking first with 74 points. Denison-Schleswig was second with 96 points while Estherville Lincoln-Central was third with 114 points.
Meanwhile, the Storm Lake girls team took 14th as a team with 395 points. Alta was the top area girls team finisher in the varsity race with 370 points. The Aurelia girls were 15th with 485 points.
Leading the Storm Lake girls was Abby Mohr, who took 58th with a time of 18:38.
Julie Manatham was 79th with a career-best time of 19:28, while Heather Douglas was 83rd in 20 minutes.
Also, Ashley Solem was 85th in 20:11, Levina Williams 90th in 20:34, Amanda Cavanaugh 91st in 20:35 and Grace Kohl 99th in 21:01.
"The girls also showed improvement as they finished ahead of two teams, which was the first time they have finished ahead of anyone this season," said Storm Lake High coach John Brostad.
"Julie Manatham had a career-best time and ran well. Julie has solid potential and showed that tonight. Lindsey Dreher and Shannon Walsh medaled in the JV race."
For Alta, sophomore Hinkeldey led the way with a 40th place finish in 17:50. Teammate Katie Connolly was 63rd in 18:48, while Briana Aube was 52nd in 18:05.
Also, Lakin Stevicks was 106th for Alta in 22:53 and Kayla Schmitz 109th in 25 minutes.
Aurelia was led by a 54th place finish by Wendy Nelson in 18:12. Christa Ballantyne was 104th in 25 minutes.
According to coach Jolene Hultgren, Tina Wagenaar was 105th, Kay Ann Kruckenberg 110th and Amanda Nelson 112th.
Sioux Central's Daly had another fine race after medaling last Saturday in the Galva-Holstein Classic. Thursday, she took 30th place in 17:17.
Just two other Sioux Central girls ran, as the Rebels did not compile a team score. Nicole Lindquist was 51st in 18:05 and Leah Whittenberg 111th in 25 minutes.
Sioux City North won the junior varsity girls race with a near-perfect score of 19 points .
Storm Lake's Lindsey Dreher medaled, taking 32nd with a time of 20:32. Teammate Shannon Walsh also medaled, taking 34th in 20:44. Senior Anna Paulsen was 45th in 22:20 and Ashley Langner was 49th in 23 minutes.
