Three SL wrestlers capture first place

CARROLL - Ben Strandberg, Matt Nitchals and Martin Banuelos all captured individual titles at their respective weight classes to help Storm Lake post a 2-3 record in the Carroll Kuemper Duals on Saturday.

Storm Lake defeated Carroll Kuemper 46-20 and Guthrie Center 39-35, but lost to Cedar Rapids Washington 37-32, Ogden 40-31 and Underwood 47-33.

"We were a bit disappointed in our performance on the day," Storm Lake coach Ty Seaman said. "At times we wrestled well but we weren't very consistent as a team."

Strandberg won all five of his matches to finish first at 189 pounds. He won by major decision 11-2, by decision 7-5, by pin in 1 minute, 13 seconds, by forfeit and by technical fall 18-3.

Nitchals won all five of his matches to place first at 215 pounds. Nitchals won by pin in 55 seconds, by pin in 2:28, by decision 4-3, by forfeit and by pin in 5:56.

Banuelos won four of five matches to finish first at 275 pounds. He was a winner by pin in 1:12, by pin in 5:36 and by forfeit twice.

"Ben, Matt and Martin all had good days," Seaman said.

Jared Ponsor won three matches at 152 pounds, as did Scott Baraibar at 119 and Dylan Wagener at 125. Al Keller and Austin Brown all won two matches apiece.
