Antique treasure hunt shows a little history

Tuesday, January 16, 2001

What a hunt it was - from old Mickey Mouse pocket books to violins and old metal advertising signs - as part of an antique treasure hunt held in Storm Lake over the weekend.

Four antique buyers were at the Knights of Columbus Hall both appraising and buying items from area residents. The event was sponsored by Majestic Comics and Coins of Storm Lake.

The main thrust of the three-day show was for buying antiques and collectibles, said Cordell Wabeke of Majestic. Along with Wabeke there were two dealers from Sioux City and another from Sioux Falls, S.D.

For Wabeke it was his first time at an "antique treasure hunt."

"This is our first time, but the others probably do it four or five times a year," he said.

The dealers were looking for everything except the kitchen sink.

"We're most interested in smaller items and knickknacks," Wabeke said. "For some of these guys getting large furniture home is difficult."

The treasure hunt seemed to be a success among people throughout the area as well, with over one hundred people attending the event.
