Tyson settles wastewater spill case in unique fashion, pays $6,000 to LPA instead of fine

Monday, August 30, 2004

Tyson Fresh Meats, of Storm Lake, has agreed to pay $6,000 to the Lake Preservation Association volunteer group in Storm Lake in lieu of a state fine over a recent spill of wastewater discharge into the lake.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources announced the decision in a consent order Thursday. Tyson has also agreed to take remedial measures to prevent or minimize wastewater discharges from the pork plant in the future, according to the DNR. The consent order will be legally enforceable, and responsible parties have 30 days to appeal the charges or 60 days to pay the penalty.
