The Storm Lake Police Department announces it has a new "Less-Lethal" Munitions System that has been placed into service.
Following over a year of research and the subsequent funding by the City Council the Police Department will place into service a Pepper Ball Weapons System.
This system, which works similar to a paint ball system, fires small plastic like balls full of OC Pepper Powder. The system is designed to fire at combative subjects, large crowds of other scenarios where less than lethal uses of force are required.
Public Safety Director Mark Prosser states, "We are constantly looking at and researching new ways of administering uses of force that are humane and less apt to cause injury or death. This system will give us another option that we can draw on in certain situations to bring incidents under control with the least amount of force being used."
The Police Department in addition to the new Pepper Ball System also utilizes chemical reagent sprays, different forms of gas and OC smoke grenades, batons and "Bean Bag" rounds fired from a shotgun all of systems of less than lethal forces.
All of these systems are deployable in certain scenarios where deadly force is not called for.
