Wastewater bypassed into West Okoboji

Tuesday, August 24, 2004

A plugged sewer line caused a wastewater bypass into West Okoboji Lake Friday morning.

A sewage smell was reported to the Iowa Great Lakes Sanitary District about 10 a.m. in an area north of Hayward's Bay near Colcord Point. A plugged line in a gravity sewer caused a backup into a manhole, which overflowed into the lake.

Officials estimate that up to several thousand gallons of wastewater were bypassed into the lake, although the exact amount is unknown. The time when the bypass began is also unknown, but the bypass ended by 11:20 a.m.

The area of the bypass is located between docks and is not easily accessible by land. Lime was applied on the rocks above the lake, and water samples were taken. No dead fish were observed.

The DNR is recommending that caution should be used while swimming in the area. There are no public beaches in the immediate vicinity of the bypass.
