It's a time to remember the past and look toward the future during Buena Vista University's annual Founders' Day ceremonies on Saturday, August 28.
A tradition for more than 25 years, Founders' Day marks the official beginning of the academic years at BVU's founders and to honor several members of the BVU family who have passed away during the last year. The afternoon's Convocation welcomes new students and their families to Buena Vista University.
Rev. Ken Meissner, university chaplain, will lead the Founders' Day Memorial Service at 11 a.m. in Schaller Memorial Chapel. The BVU community will pay tribute to Frances Allen, a former staff member; Duane Haack, a former English professor; Charles Lehnus, a university benefactor; Marian Pierce, benefactor and wife of former BVU trustee Dr. Kelvin Pierce; and Reginald Schive, a former band director.
The traditional academic procession of faculty and new students through the Victory Arch begins at 2:45 p.m., with the Founders' Day Convocation immediately following in Schaller Memorial Chapel. Dr. Peter Steinfeld, associate professor of religion and philosophy and the 2003 Wythe Award winner, will present the Founders' Day address.
A reception on the Schaller Memorial Chapel lawn, hosted by President Fred and Susan Moore, follows the convocation. All Founders' Day events are open to the public, free of charge.
