Alta Superintendent Dr. Fred Maharry explained that more classrooms are needed at the elementary school as the board reviewed a construction grant application during Monday night's meeting.
Maharry said he feels this grant is something that the district needs to apply for in preparation for future construction.
The number one priority is to construct more classrooms that can be used by elementary and junior high students in a flexible manner, Maharry said. Sharing media, art and music areas between the levels would also be emphasized.
"This is a general plan that may still be amended by the Facilities Study Committee," Maharry said. "I think by going after this grant money it will show people that we are serious about making more space."
Board member Rich Marshall said it's important for everyone to know that the board doesn't want to over-step anyone or the facilities committee in going after this grant money, but that he feels the district should try to get as much money as they can.
The grant application is due on January 16.
