Remember when girls in leather pants and boys wearing chains symbolized teenagers' rebellion against conformity?
Well, take a stroll into your child's cafeteria this year and check out the current attire of the under-12 set. Black fake leather pants are one of the hottest items for girls-the tighter the better. Hip? Certainly. Age-appropriate? Certainly not. The same goes for boys wearing chain belts on pants so oversized that the legs drag under their shoes.
Many experts believe that allowing elementary school children to dress like teenagers or adults can actually be harmful, pushing them toward inappropriate behaviors and attitudes at a time when they should be enjoying childhood. But it's hard to convince children to dress like children when they see stores filled with pint-sized versions of hot high school fashions.
