SPENCER - Freshman Molly Daniels poured in a career-high 20 points, but it wasn't enough as Spencer escaped with a 57-55 win over Storm Lake in a Lakes Conference game Wednesday night at Spencer.
Storm Lake led 16-14 after the first quarter, but trailed 28-24 at the half. It was 43-40 Spencer heading into the fourth quarter of play.
Spencer made 28 of 51 field goals for 55 percent compared to 20 of 68 for 29 percent for Storm Lake.
Storm Lake made 13 of 21 free throws to the Tigers' 2 of 8.
"We played hard and we played well enough to win," Storm Lake coach Stacey VanDerSloot said. "However, they shot 55 percent from the field and it's pretty tough to beat a team who shoots that well."
Brooke Overturf contributed 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Tornadoes, now 1-7 overall. Malay Bouaphakeo added seven points and three assists, while Karen Sennert had six rebounds.
Daniels, Chelsea Anderson and Jenny Woodford all had two assists apiece.
"The whole team played well together," VanDerSloot said. "The girls will continue to play hard and improve. There is a lot of competitiveness in this group. They will see some great success with each game."
Storm Lake plays at 16th-ranked Western Christian on Monday night.
