While the Gateway lighthouse provides a new welcome sign for visitors to Storm Lake, the Chamber of Commerce now hopes to create another type of welcome beacon - to attract retail business to Storm Lake.
The chamber proposes to bolster downtown retail activity by hiring a business recruiter. Chamber officials requested funding for the new position from the Storm Lake City Council during this week's budget requests.
"We've been hearing different comments from different chamber members regarding the business climate in downtown and the need for more retail vitality downtown," said Tim Rebnord, incoming chamber president for 2001.
The business recruiter would be responsible for generating interest among retail business to set up shop in Storm Lake, Rebnord explained. The idea for such a targeted recruiting position first came up in a Chamber retreat at the end of November, he added.
