If classic tractor pulling isn't enough action for you, then you'll want to check out this year's Buena Vista County Fair in which two alternate pulling competitions will be featured. The Antique Tractor Pull will be held Saturday, July 24 at 10 a.m., which is a recent time change from 11:00 a.m. The pull will be sponsored by the Iowa Central Antique Pullers and will feature three divisions; stock, classics, and open. The stock class will be traditional tractors, with no modifications. Classics are typically adjusted with cut tires or bigger tires and engine modifications. Classic pulls also can go no faster than 3.5 miles per hour, or they will be disqualified. Finally, the open class is an anything goes competition, although there is a limit on the RPMs a tractor can reach.
The Fair organizers are expecting 40 to 50 tractors at the pull, and about 120 "hooks," or pulls.
The Mini-Rod competition will be held Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and will be put on the the Northwest Iowa Mini-Rod Association out of LeMars, who have done shows across northwest Iowa, Nebraska, and South Dakota. Mini-Rods are basically lawn tractors that have been modified for pulling. There will be different classes within the show, including garden tractors, which are regular lawn tractors, and modified classes, which may have a motorcycle engine installed in them.
According to organizer Clay Drenth, both of these non-traditional competitions will be "something to watch."
