The 2004 Newell-Fonda Mustang volleyball camp will be held Aug. 10-13 at Newell-Fonda High School in Newell.

The camp is for youngsters entering grades 5-8 and will take place each day from noon to 2:30 p.m. The cost of the camp is $25 and entries are due by July 28, 2004.

Wartburg College junior Missy Buttry of Shenendoah concluded her 2004 U.S. Track and Field Olympic Team Trials effort with an eighth-place finish in the 5,000 meter finals on Monday, July 12.

Buttry finished the race with a time of 15 minutes, 46.21 seconds.

Shayne Culpepper, Maria Runyan and Shalene Flanagan were the top three finishers and will represent the U.S. in the 5,000 meters at the Summer games next month in Athens, Greece.

Buttry, a combined nine-time NCAA Division III cross country/track and field national champion, qualified fourth fastest for the final, clocking a time of 15:39.32 in the semifinals July 9.

Dia Dohlman of Eldora, Wartburg's two time national champion in the javelin, placed 18th in the Olympic Trial preliminaries July 9, turning in a toss of 144 feet, 8 inches. The last qualifier in the finals concluded the semifinal with a toss of 164 feet, 8 inches.

Meanwhile, former Wartburg distance runner Roby Olson Freeman placed 39th in the Olympic marathon finals last spring.



The Cherokee Parks and Recreation Department has started accepting registration for a co-ed softball league.

The league starts Sunday, July 25 and all games will be played at Wescott Park on Sundays. The registration deadline for teams is Monday, July 19.

The season will last about six weeks, depending on the number of teams registered. Tentative start times are 5 p.m. 6 p.m and 7 p.m.

The entry fee is $100 per team. Each team member must pay a $5 membership fee to the Cherokee Softball Association. All softballs will be provided.

Teams are made up of five males and five females. Teams will be required to help with the umpire duties and scoreboard.
