Immigrant turned local leader shares in recognition

Tuesday, January 2, 2001

Hector Velez, a native of Puerto Rico, will celebrate his sixth year as a citizen of the City Beautiful next June. Over those years of living and working in the community, Velez has come to appreciate the community spirit of Storm Lake.

"You can feel the possibilities," he said. "The thing that really sold me on Storm Lake is if you really put an effort forth you can see a difference being made.

"If you work at something, that can really make a difference. I've seen that and I've experienced it and that's a feeling that's very, very rewarding."

One reward he didn't expect was the 2001 Citizens of the Year honor for individual achievement, presented today by the Pilot-Tribune editorial board.

During his time here Velez has served Storm Lake through a variety of volunteer activities, from Habitat for Humanity to the service and cultural group Guadalupanos Inc. to being a voice on key state committees.
