Law changes for absentee ballot voting

Tuesday, July 13, 2004

The law has changed regarding requests for absentee ballots. Previously a voter could submit a handwritten request to the Election Commissioner with the name and signature of the registered voter, the address at which the voter is registered to vote, and the name or date of the election for which the absentee ballot is requested.

With the signing of SF 2269 by Governor Vilsack, beginning with elections held after September 15, 2004, the law now requires the use of an official Absentee Ballot Request form. In addition to the usual information, the voter's driver's license number (or non-operator ID number, or last 4 digits of their Social Security number) and date of birth are required. The form also inquires whether the voter has moved from the address where he/she is registered.

A written Absentee Ballot Request may be submitted at any time prior to an election. A voter may apply in person in the Commissioner's office not more than 70 days before an election. August 25th is the 70th day before the General Election in November. Ballots for that election will not be available until September 23rd.

Voters may download an Absentee Ballot Request form from either the Buena Vista County Election Commissioner website: www.co.buena-vista .ia. us/auditor/election/Links_ Questions/Absentee_Ballot.pdf, or the Secretary of State's website: www.sos. state.ia.us /PDFS/AbsenteeBallot App2002.pdf. Or, a voter can call to request a form mailed to them.

If you have any questions about absentee ballots or voter registration, please call the Commissioner's office at 712-749-2542.

The filing period for the November General Election begins August 2nd and ends August 25th. Nomination papers and candidate information are available from the County Commissioner of Elections. The following local, non-partisan offices will be on the General Election ballot: Ag Extension Councilmember (4 to be elected), Hospital Trustee (2 to be elected), Soil & Water Conservation Commissioner (3 to be elected). Independent candidates may file for County Supervisor - District 4, County Supervisor - District 5, County Sheriff and County Auditor.

An insufficient number of candidates were nominated at the Primary to fill all of the township trustee positions. Ballot vacancies exist in Elk, Fairfield, Lee, Maple Valley, Newell and Scott Townships. For further information, contact the Commissioner of Elections, 749-2542.
