Funeral services for Alta Sherkenbach, 97, of Aurelia, were held 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 27. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Aurelia with Pastor Larry Lemke officiating.
Burial was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Aurelia. Wharton-Redig Funeral Home in Aurelia was in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Sherkenbach passed away Saturday, Dec. 23, at Sunset Knoll Retirement Home in Aurelia where she had been a resident since Aug. 13, 1991.
Alta Cora, the daughter of Nels and Larsirie (Jensen) Nielsen, was born June 19, 1903, in Ruthven. She graduated from Ruthven High School and attended the Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls and Buena Vista College in Storm Lake.
She began her teaching in country schools in several rural Cherokee locations. She taught at Fairview, then Quimby and in Aurelia from 1954 until her retirement in May of 1972.
On June 16, 1930, she was united in marriage to Ernst Henry Sherkenbach in Parker, S.D.
Mrs. Sherkenbach was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Aurelia where she also taught Sunday School and was a member of the ladies aid. She enjoyed gardening, traveling, watching sporting events and her family.
She was preceded in death by her husband Ernst on July 16, 1951; one brother Albert Nielsen and one son-in-law Charles Hilsabeck.
Mrs. Sherkenbach is survived by one daughter Shirley Hilsabeck of Aurelia; one son Stanley Sherkenbach of Aurelia; one daughter-in-law Joan Sherkenbach of Aurelia; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
