Try five steps to a healthier winter
In this season of colds and flu bugs, perhaps the best gift you can give yourself and your family this time of year is good health. The Health News service of Des Moines University-Osteopathic Medical Center (DMU) offers some tips to keep you healthy.
*Guard against accidents. Many people end up in the emergency room during the winter with bruises, sprains and broken bones because they decided to take the garbage to the curb or retrieve their morning paper on a slippery morning wearing only their slippers. Always wear winter-appropriate shoes when you go out, and, if it's icy, plan your route so you can steady yourself as much as possible. If you do slip, you may pull a muscle or cause a muscle spasm. If that happens, try soaking in a warm tub to get heat to the sore muscle. For a more severe strain, seek medical attention.
