Tuesday, December 19, 2000

LEMARS - Kari Traver scored 14 points and Amber Arends added 12 as LeMars defeated Storm Lake 56-38 in a Lakes Conference game last Friday night at LeMars.

LeMars jumped out to a 17-2 lead after the first quarter and held a 30-16 lead at the half. It was 43-26 entering the fourth period.

Billie Blanchard scored 13 points to lead Storm Lake. Molly Daniels added 10. Blanchard grabbed nine rebounds and Brooke Overturf seven.

Overturf handed out three assists, while Daniels charted three steals.

Storm Lake was 15 of 57 from the field for 26 percent compared to 22 of 56 for 39 percent for LeMars.

Storm Lake made 8 of 17 free throws while LeMars was 11 of 20 for 55 percent.

"We had three of our starters sick with the flu," Storm Lake coach Stacey VanDerSloot said. "That makes a big difference. If we could have taken the first quarter out ... the second through the fourth quarter we played them to a one-point game. We didn't handle their height very well."

Storm Lake, now 1-4 in the league and 1-6 overall, hosts unbeaten Estherville tonight.
