The St. Mary's baseball team opened its Northwest Conference season here Tuesday night with a convincing 14-2 win in five innings over Aurelia.
With the conference win, the Panthers improved to 4-2 overall.
Bulldog pitchers helped St. Mary's out with nine walks and one hit batsmen, but the Panthers capitalized with some clutch hitting.
Also, St. Mary's got a good performance on the mound from Kevin Brown, who went the distance. Both runs he gave up were unearned and he gave up just three hits, walking two and striking out eight.
Andy Dahm led the offense for the Panthers with two hits, including a two-run double.
Several other St. Mary's players had run producing, clutch hits. Nick Netsch and T.J. Miller each had two run singles while Sam Becker added an RBI-single. Also, Ryne Paterson had a single for the Panthers.
"This was a good way to open the conference season," said St. Mary's coach Ryan Berg. "We took advantage of their walks by getting some key hits.
"We're pleased at where we are so far this season. We are still making early-season mistakes, but we've been able to overcome most of them and win."
The Panthers played host to Alta Wednesday night in Storm Lake but results were not available at press time.
