Art show features SL duo's fascination with Loess Hills

Thursday, June 3, 2004

The Lakes Art Center in Okoboji features an exhibit titled "Meditations on the Loess Hills" beginning June 5. The display features oil paintings by Dennis Dykema and photography by Dr. Bruce Ellingson, both of Storm Lake.

During the 1990s, various groups in Iowa advanced the initiative to have the Loess Hills designated as a national park. That effort continues today, and some federal funds have become available to preserve bits of the hills.

Dykema's interest and involve-ment in the Loess Hills project is long-standing. His paintings first came into notice with his participation in the 1994 traveling exhibit developed by the Brunier Gallery entitled "Fragile Giants." As a result of their common interest in the Loess Hills landscape, Dykema and Ellingson, colleagues on the faculty of Buena Vista University for 17 years, began a collaborative effort in the fall of 2000 to interpret the Loess Hills landscape on canvas and film.

An opening reception is scheduled from 6-8 p.m. Friday, June 18. The exhibit will be on display through July 17.
