Trial for '99 murder sees more delays

Thursday, December 14, 2000

The first-degree murder trial of Rene Zarate, 16, has been delayed again due to a defense motion filed yesterday morning to prevent the prosecution from presenting certain evidence in the trial.

Zarate, who will be tried as an adult, is accused of the May 2, 1999, stabbing death of Jorge Ramos, 47. Isaac Cruz, 15, was also charged with murder, but during a plea agreement hearing Monday afternoon pled guilty to a lesser charge of second-degree burglary in exchange for testimony against Zarate.

In question yesterday was evidence gathered from Zarate immediately after his arrest.
