Robert Maharry, a 4th grade student at Alta elementary won the school-level competition of the National Geographic Bee held at the Roxy Theatre in Alta on Wednesday and a chance at a $25,000 college scholarship.
The school-level Bee, at which students answered oral questions on geography, was the first round in the 13th annual National Geographic Bee.
The National Geographic Society is holding the National Geographic Bee for students in the fourth through the eighth grades in thousands of schools across the United States and in the five U.S. territories, as well as in Department of Defense Dependents Schools around the world.
The kickoff for this year's Bee was the week of November 27, with thousands of schools around the United States and in the five U.S. territories participating. The school winners, including Maharry, will now take a written test; up to 100 of the top scorers in each state and territory will be eligible to compete in their state Bee April 6.
