Defining beauty on 'Living in Iowa' program

Tuesday, December 12, 2000

You expect Miss Iowa to be beautiful. And Miss Iowa 2000 Theresa Uchytil is, although not by traditional beauty queen standards. Theresa Uchytil was born without a left hand.

Iowa Public Television's Living in Iowa, which airs on Friday, Dec. 15 at 8:30 p.m. and again on Sunday, Dec. 17 at 7:30 p.m., examines how Uchytil, the former baton twirler for the Iowa State University marching band, is working to help Iowans and others redefine old notions of perfection and beauty.

"Am I perfect?" she asks. "Well, no. But is somebody with glasses perfect? Am I any less perfect because I'm missing a left hand? Well, maybe in some people's eyes, but in mine and in my family's and in so many of my supporters, I'm just the same, and a little more perfect than some people."

Uchytil notes that her selection as Miss Iowa is allowing her to make a difference, especially with her message to disabled children that anything is possible.
