Cowboy Up for PRCA Rodeo

Tuesday, May 18, 2004

The Cherokee Rodeo Board of Governors, and Barnes/MJ Rodeo Company are preparing for another great ride at the 2004 Cherokee PRCA Rodeo Thursday, Friday and Saturday, June 3, 4 and 5.

Rodeo shows will be held at 7:30 each night. For the first time in nearly 30 years, the Cherokee PRCA Rodeo will crown its very own Rodeo Queen to represent the Cherokee Rodeo at rodeos, parades and promotional events throughout the region.

The Queen contest will allow area women ages 17-23 to compete in horsemanship, appearance, personality, speech, and most photogenic categories.

Current Miss Iowa Rodeo Queen Megan Wiemold of Cherokee will be offering a special Queen's Clinic.

The Thursday, June 3 performance will be Family Night and will feature fun things for the kids to do, along with "Mutton Bustin'." There will be various games and attractions, a petting zoo, free pony rides, vendors, and concessions available on the grounds.

Friday morning, June 4, the Chamber Coffee will be at the La Grande Hacienda, followed by the speech and appearance competition for the Queen candidates.

Friday night will be "Meet the Queens" night with a special old-time Chuck Wagon Feed adjacent to the Rodeo grounds (Cherokee Count Fair Grounds), plus the Queen's horsemanship competition. Vendors will also ply their western wares and concessions will be open to the public each night.

Saturday will kick off with the dedication of the proposed new Cherokee Arena and a Home Ranch Show, plus the popular noon BBQ at the historic Cherokee Railroad Depot.

The large Cherokee PRCA Rodeo Parade will start at 4 p.m. and run from the Cherokee Washington High school parking area, south on U.S. Highway 59 to the Rodeo Grounds.

Saturday night's performance also will include a special tribute to our Armed Forces, a skydiving tribute to Old Glory, and the Rodeo Queen Coronation Ceremony.
