Tuesday, May 11, 2004

Family and friends of Shirley Sorbe announce that the 2004 recipient of the Shirley Sorbe Memorial Scholarship is Karmen Loving. She is the daughter of Robert and Mavis Loving of Albert City and attends Albert City-Truesdale School in Albert City. Karmen was selected from a field of 19 candidates from Buena Vista County. The scholarship committee selected Loving for this award because of her exemplary personal and professional qualities, achievements and attitude.

Karmen is a member of the National Honor Society, Who's Who among High School Students and a Wendy's Heisman Scholarship school nominee. She serves as co-editor of the yearbook, and has served on the student council and is president of the senior class and Leaders of the Future club.

She has been active in her community and church. Activities at school have included drill team, cheerleading, volleyball and softball.

Karmen also works part-time as a CNA at the Pleasant View Nursing Home in Albert City.

Her future plans are to attend the University of Iowa to pursue a physical therapy major.

The Shirley Sorbe Memorial Scholarship was founded to pay tribute to an outstanding individual and longtime resident of Buena Vista County. Shirley was an employee of Buena Vista County Farm Bureau for over 39 years and a long-time resident of the Rembrandt and Alta communities.
