There is still time for Storm Lake charities to enter in the New Car Dealers Show competition, coming up May 13-15 at the Merrill Manufacturing North lot location.
Postcards have been sent to about 40 area charitable community organizations. The sign-up deadline has been waived in hopes of gaining more participation in the contest.
As of earlier this week, four local groups had already signed up to take part.
In the contest, representatives of each community organizations place their hands on a vehicle at the car show, and the last one to keep contact wins $5,000 for their organization's community efforts.
Some rules changes have been made for this year's event. While the contest runs over a 56-hour period, the organizations will be allowed to have two representatives compete in shifts, so a second person can take over at the 28-hour mark. Only one shift "change" is allowed. If more than one organization goes the distance, they will be able to choose to have the prize winner drawn from a hat, or to split the prize equally.
"We want to really encourage all the civic organizations to take part. Think how many fundraisers it might take to raise $5,000," said auto dealer Tom Fitzpatrick. "We want to make sure that no group gets left out if they would like to participate, and we also encourage people to come out during the car show and cheer on these participants."
Interested charitable groups should contact Gene Rasmussen at Rasmussen Ford in Storm Lake to sign up.
