While the idea of establishing taxing districts to support lake restoration efforts wasn't welcomed with open arms, those attending a community forum on Storm Lake were overwhelming supportive of organizing local action to expand the dredging project.
Plans for the dredging project were discussed, but a major focus of the meeting was to examine the possibility of local fundraising to support further lake dredging and watershed improvements.
Steve Roth, president of the Lake Preservation Association (LPA), gave an update on the Iowa Department of Natural Resources dredging project. According to John Murray, attorney for the Wetherell trust, the spoil site design has been approved by the Corps of Engineers and awaits approval from the DNR Flood Plains division, Roth said.
"They hope to have dirt work done by mid-summer," Roth said, adding that the 180-acre dredge area should be completed by the end of next year.
