Lighting tonight marks high point in Storm Lake's Gateway project

Tonight's first lighting of the Connell's Corner lighthouse Gateway project marks the culmination of more than three years of work by the Storm Lake Chamber of Commerce.

It also marks one of the Storm Lake business organization's most ambitious fund-raising projects, raising $100,000 from a total of 365 donors of cash and in-kind materials and services.

Here's a brief recap of the project, as provided by the chamber's steering committee:

Bypass sparked action

The 1996 completion of the bypassing of Storm Lake by Highway 71 was the catalyst for the Gateway project being celebrated this week. Local business leaders felt some type of large scale welcome sign was needed to give bypass travelers a positive impression of Storm Lake and encourage them to take the two-mile side trip into town.
