Saku Radia, the chief financial officer of the Meredith Corporation, visited Buena Vista University for two presentations on Nov. 29. Radia spoke to BVU students about what skills they will need to succeed in a financial role, and he also shared his own "rags to riches" story.
A native of Uganda who is of Indian descent, Radia received a B.S. degree in accounting with distinction from Iowa State University. After 25 years at KPMG, Radia was named chief financial officer of the Meredith Corporation on March 1, 2000. Meredith is a diversified media and marketing company with business centering on magazine and book publishing, including Better Homes and Gardens and Ladies' Home Journal.
Radia told BVU students how he overcame diversity obstacles to pursue his dreams in the corporate world. He also stressed the importance of devotion to public service and giving back to the community. Radia, himself, is the founder of the Greater Des Moines Junior Soccer League and a volunteer for many non-profit organizations.
Radia's campus visit was part of BVU's Academic and Cultural Events Series (ACES).
