Peacocks sweep BVU nine
Upper Iowa University had it's collective hitting shoes on here Saturday, sweeping a high-scoring doubleheader from Buena Vista University at the Storm Lake HIgh field.
The Peacocks rallied for 11 runs in the last three innings of game one to post a come-from-behind, 13-10 win, then won 12-2 in game two.
With the two non-conference losses, the Beavers dropped to 17-19 overall while Upper Iowa improved to 22-26.
In game one, BVU led 8-2 after four innings, but were able to score just two more runs, those both coming in the bottom of the sixth.
Meanwhile, the Peacocks scored once in each of the first two innings but were held scoreless by BVU mound starter Jason Hillman over the next two frames.
Upper Iowa rallied for the win by scoring five runs in the fifth, four in the sixth and two in the top of the seventh.
Hillman pitched the first four-plus innings, giving up six runs on six hits and seven walks. He struck out three. BVU righthander Kyle Sawyer took the loss, going the last three innings and yielding seven runs (just six were earned) on seven hits, three walks and three strikeouts.
In game one, BVU rightfielder MIke Soenen drove home a run in the first with a single, then banged a towering shot to leftcenter for a two-run homer in the fourth to give the Beavers their biggest lead at 8-2.
BVU added three runs in the second on a three-run homer by centerfielder Joe Poole. They added two more in the third on a fielder's choice and an error.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Beavers scored twice to get to within an 11-10 deficit on a two run-double by first baseman Ben Lickteig.
Upper Iowa scored its 13 runs on ten hits, ten walks and two BVU errors.
Offensively for the Beavers, Soenen and Poole each had three RBI with Soenen going 2 for 3. Lickteig was 3 for 4 with two RBI.
Meanwhile, in game two, Upper Iowa righthander Brandon Bowling limited BVU to just six hits in going the distance for the mound win. The Beavers managed only single runs in the third and fifth innings off Bowling, who walked just two and struck out five.
Jeremiah Knutzen went the first four and a third innings for BVU, taking the loss in giving up eight runs on nine hits and two walks. He struck out two. BVU pitchers Dan Reis and Nick Kafka finished up, with Reis pitching two innings and Kafka one.
Upper Iowa struck for one run in the first, and like game one, came on late in the contest. The Peacocks scored in each of the last four innings, including two in the fourth, five in the fifth, two in the sixth and two in the seventh.
Upper Iowa finished with 14 hits, collected four walks and took advantage of three BVU errors.
BVU scored its run in the third in an RBI-single by Lickteig and added an unearned run in the fifth.
BVU shortstop Brian Ricken and Lickteig each had two hits for BVU, which plays host to Morningside College today at the SLHS field starting at 2 p.m.
