Newell-Fonda routs Aurelia; Alta upends S-C
NEWELL - Corey Carlton scored 16 points and Jon Grote and Jason Ripke added 15 points apiece as Newell-Fonda routed Aurelia 89-63 in a Northwest Conference game Friday night at Newell.
Newell-Fonda jumped out to 21-14 lead after the first quarter and extended it to 39-30 at the half. It was 65-44 after three periods of play.
Travis Brown added 11 points and Bryce Edwards 10 for the Mustangs, now 2-0 overall. Wade Brower and Carlton each cleared six rebounds, while Brown charted four steals.
Newell-Fonda was 33 of 61 shooting from the floor for 54 percent, including 11 of 21 from 3-point range. Aurelia was 24 of 50 for 48 percent.
Eric Sonksen scored 18 points to lead Aurelia. Tadd Suhr added 13 and Heath Brecher nine.
"I thought we played very well in the second half and reduced our fouling in the second half and let the game flow, Newell-Fonda coach Paul Loos said.
Wes Bunjes pumped in 21 points and Brad Bunjes added 18 as Alta used a big third quarter to pull away and beat Schaller-Crestland in Northwest Conference play Friday night.
Schaller-Crestland led 11-10 after the first quarter, but Alta took a 37-35 halftime lead. The Cyclones then used a 25-6 spurt in the third quarter to grab a 62-41 advantage.
Heath Glienke scored 11 points for Alta, now 2-1 overall.
Jason Pyle tossed in 23 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Wildcats, while Greg Allen added 12 points and six rebounds. Tim Galvin charted four steals.
Alta was 9 of 10 from 3-point range and 28 of 52 overall for 54 percent. Schaller-Crestland was 22 of 60 overall for 37 percent.
