Storm Lake has recently opened its own Family History Center, located at 1411 East Lakeshore Drive. The new center is open to the general public at no charge in hopes of helping them find all the history they are looking for.
Janice Danielson has headed up the new center and said she's very excited to bring this opportunity to the area. There are other Family History Centers in Spencer, Fort Dodge and Sioux City.
"I think this is a big boost for those who are interested in family history," Danielson said. "Genealogy is the second most popular pastime in the world. Tons of people are doing this and now they can do it right here."
Family History Centers are branch facilities of the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. These centers provide access to most of the microfilms and microfiche in the Family History Library and help patrons identify their ancestors.
There are more than 3,400 Family History Centers operating in 75 countries and territories. They are staffed by more than 25,000 volunteers and are visited each month by thousands of patrons. The Family History Centers receive copies of 100,000 rolls of microfilm each month.
