Listening or reading accounts of what Jesse Wendelsdorf told Julie Ballantini will likely leave many in shock, but the jury foreman of Wendelsdorf's trial in Buena Vista County said he was not surprised to learn of the alleged confession.
Storm Laker Paul Bowers said that throughout jury deliberations last July, the jurors continued to look for either Wendelsdorf or Heidi Watkins to "trip themselves up," he said.
With a hearing set for a possible new trial for Heidi Watkins, though, Bowers said it is still uncertain what the confession tapes will mean for Wendelsdorf's future.
"If it turns out that it did indeed happen, I'm sure our system of justice will be moving forward," Bowers said. "I'm confident that ultimately in the justice system the right thing gets done."
