Panthers first at Alta meet

The Storm Lake St. Mary's girls track and field team is in a roll.

The Panthers won their first meet in four years here Tuesday afternoon, winning the Class 1A portion of the Alta Invitational.

The Lady Panthers finished with 124 points to 112 for Spalding Catholic and 105 for Remsen-St. Mary's. Aurelia was fourth with 84 points while Whiting and Twin River Valley were fifth and sixth, respectively.

"The girls put together another night of great performances," said Storm Lake St. Mary's coach Angie Reinert. "It is very exciting to win six of seven relays, place first in four individual events and second in two more individual events."

The Lady Panthers set four meet records in four relay events, with all four taking first places.

The shuttle hurdle relay team of Janie Imming, Jess Lussman, Colleen Smith and Marisha Imming was first in a new meet record time of 1 minute, 10.74 seconds. The distance medley relay team of Megan Snyder, Maggie Lange, Kassie Drey and Michelle Drey was first in a new meet record time of 4:35.

Also setting a new meet record (2:00.31) was the first place sprint medley relay team of Snyder, Lindsay Clausen, Lange and freshman Abby Richardson. The 4x400 team of Janie Imming, Becky Lenhart, Michelle Drey and Kassie Drey set a new meet mark in winning that event in 4:28.99.

Two other relay teams took first places, as the 4x200 team of Lange, Richardson, Clausen and Kassie Drey was first in 1:53.54. The 4x100 team of Matty Richardson, Colleen Smith, Megan Snyder and Marisha Imming was first in 56.54 seconds.

The Panthers added four individual first places. Richardson won the long jump (15-5.75), Clausen the open 200 meters (28.25 seconds), Marisha Imming the 100 hurdles (17 seconds) and Jess Lussman the discus (96 feet.)

In addition, Kassie Drey was second in the discus (93-2) and Lenhart second in the 800 meter run (2:43.41).

Meanwhile, the Aurelia girls track and field team took three first places, two second places and four third places.

The 4x800 relay team of Leah Fishman, Emily Sonksen, Sara Husman and Wendy Nelson was first with a new meet record time of 10:57.

Kristine Munden took first in the 100 meter dash with a time of 13.76 seconds, while Wendy Nelson added a first in the 400 hurdles with a time of 75 seconds.

Munden added a second in the 100 meter hurdles in 17.43 seconds, while the 4x400 relay team of Fishman, Sonksen, Nelson and Munden was second in 4:34.

Munden added a third in the discus with a toss of 92-11 while senior Melissa Keith was third in the shot put.

The distance medley relay team of Christa Corderman, Sonksen, Liz Laursen and Husman was third in 2:13. Also, the sprint medley relay team of Jana Radke, Tara Fordyce, Laursen and Husman was third in 2:13.
