The Cherokee Chamber of Commerce and Barnes/MJM Rodeo Company are preparing for another great ride at the 2004 Cherokee PRCA Rodeo scheduled for Thursday, Friday, Saturday, June 3-4-5.
For the first time in nearly 30 years, the Cherokee PRCA Rodeo will crown its own Rodeo Queen.
The Queen contest will allow area women ages 10-23 to compete in horsemanship, appearance, personality, speech, and most photogenic.
Current Miss Iowa Rodeo Queen Megan Wiemold of Cherokee will be offering a special Queen's Clinic in May to teach any girl from ages 10-100 the essentials to becoming a Rodeo Queen.
* The Thursday, June 3 performance will be Family Night and will feature fun things for the kids to do, along with "Mutton Bustin'." There will be various games and attractions, a petting zoo, free pony rides, vendors, and concessions available on the grounds.
* Friday morning June 4, the Chamber Coffee will be at the La Grande Hacienda, followed by the speech and appearance competition for the Queen candidates. Friday noon at Bits & Pieces, an open salad luncheon will be held to allow the public to visit with the local Queen contestants, plus the many State Rodeo Queens in attendance.
Friday night will be "Meet The Queens" night with a special old-time Chuck Wagon Feed adjacent to the Rodeo grounds (Cherokee County Fair Grounds), plus the Queen's horsemanship competition.
Vendors also will ply their Western wares and concessions will be open to the public each night.
* Saturday will kick off with the dedication of the proposed new Cherokee Arena and a Home and Ranch Show, plus the popular noon BBQ at the historic Cherokee Railroad Depot.
The large Cherokee PRCA Rodeo Parade will start at 4 p.m. and run from the Cherokee Washington High School parking area, south on U.S. Highway 59 to the Rodeo Grounds.
Saturday night's performance also will include a special tribute to our Armed Forces, a skydiving tribute to Old Glory, and the Rodeo Queen Coronation ceremony.
