Then there were two

Tuesday, November 28, 2000

Randy Persoon has withdrawn as a candidate for the Storm Lake City Council, leaving Sherise Gibson and Hector Velez as the remaining two candidates running for an open seat.

Persoon, who operates the Storm Lake Taxi, told the Pilot-Tribune that he had made the decision this weekend to leave the race for the council seat vacated by Bob Ferguson in September.

"I can no longer seek the election due to personal reasons and a conflict of interests," Persoon said.

Persoon said he learned last week of a possible conflict of interest with the RIDES transportation program if he would be elected to the council. He said there could be a possible conflict between his own taxi service and the regional transit authority when and if it seeks money from the city of Storm Lake.

"I don't feel that would be fair to them or me or to the city of Storm Lake," Persoon said.

That leaves Gibson and Velez running for the council seat. A special election has been set for Dec. 5.
