Housing study in BV: a 'chicken or the egg' scenario

Northwest Iowa Planning and Development Commission is assisting seven cities in Buena Vista County on a housing needs assessment with an eye toward future growth.

So far Albert City, Alta, Truesdale, Linn Grove and Newell have completed surveys. Lakeside is in the process of identifying its goals, while the survey portion of Storm Lake's assessment continues.

Results of the housing assessment will assist in applying for grants as well as community planning. Even at this early stage, the challenges showing up are clear.

"We've been saying this for so long - they go hand in hand. We still have a housing shortage and have a shortage of labor," said David Horan, executive director of the Spencer-based Northwest Iowa Planning and Develop-ment Commission.
