Sexual assault suspect still at large in SL

Tuesday, November 28, 2000

A Storm Lake man charged with sexual assault remained at large at presstime Friday. Joel Calderon, 33, is wanted by Storm Lake police for a reported sexual assault of a 6-year-old girl last weekend.

The Storm Lake Police Department is asking anyone with information on his whereabouts to contact the police department at 732-8010.

He is believed to be driving a 1983 blue Chevy Celebrity with Iowa registration 553JFK. An area broadcast has been put out for other law enforcement agencies to be on the lookout.

The assault occurred last Saturday while the girl's mother went to the store, leaving the girl under the supervision of Calderon. While the mother was out, Calderon allegedly locked the girl's 10-year old brother out of the apartment and attempted to have intercourse with the girl. The assault was interrupted when the 10-year old brother continually hammered on the door of the apartment.

When the mother returned home and learned of the attack, she confronted the boyfriend and he left the scene. The mother then took the victim to the hospital, where the police were summoned.

The 6-year old victim was treated and then transferred to Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City for further treatment. The 6-year old female victim was not seriously injured, according to a police statement.
