Students may apply for Hoover scholarship program

Tuesday, March 2, 2004

The Herbert Hoover Presidential Library Association in West Branch sponsors the Hoover Uncommon Student Award, a program for Iowa high school juniors. Three $5,000 scholarships are awarded annually for study at an accredited two or four year college or university anywhere in the country. The application postmark deadline is March 31.

Herbert Hoover, West Branch native and the nations' 31st president, is the inspiration for the award. The award program seeks to identify uncommon students during their junior year in high school. Students are NOT evaluated on the basis of grades, test scores, essays, or financial need.

Applicants are asked to submit a proposal for a project they want to accomplish.

The selection committee is interested in innovative and creative proposals demonstrating a student's initiative and problem-solving ability. Two letters of recommendation are also required.

In October, approximately 15 senior award finalists, at the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library-Museum, make presentations about their projects. Each student receives $750 at that time. Three of those students are chosen to receive the $5,000 scholarship award.
