Students selected for BVU Honor Band Festival

The 23rd Annual Buena Vista University Honor Band Festival will be held on Feb. 28.

The following students from Storm Lake Middle School have been selected to perform in the festival: Shelby Overmohle, Jessica Mikel, Zach Kelly, Amy Kessler, Kelsey O'Bannon, James Simmons, Darren Johnson.

From St. Mary's, these students were selected to take part: eighth grade-Annette Frank (clarinet) and Christine Pudenz (flute); seventh grade-Leigh VanderWoude (clarinet) and Christine Becker (flute).

Membership to the 100 plus-member middle school band (grades seven and eight) and the 100 plus-member honor band (grades nine-12) were selected on the basis of nominations submitted by their school band directors. Over 25 school districts are participating, including schools from Iowa, Nebraska, and Minnesota. Students will gather on the Buena Vista University campus on Saturday for two three-hour rehearsals with the guest conductors. Both bands will perform a grand finale concert at Schaller Memorial Chapel on the BVU campus at 6:30 pm.

Guest conductors for this year's festival will be: Kevin Linder for the high school honor band and Lori Linder for the middle school honor band.

The Linders are longtime music educators in Northwest Iowa with strong music programs to their credit. The finale concert is open to the public and admission is free.

The guest conductor of the high school honor band is Kevin Linder. Mr. Linder is a graduate of Morningside College, where he received his Bachelors of Music Education degree. He has been a professional educator for the past 23 years. Mr Linder has taught in the Anthon-Oto Community School District for eight years, in the Eagle Grove Community School District for two years, and in the Sioux City Community School District for the past 13 years. He has split his time in Sioux City at East High School for seven years and has spent the last six school terms as the assistant band director for North High School and Woodrow Wilson Middle School.

Mr. Linder, along with his wife, Lori, built an excellent band program while in Anthon-Oto district which was featured in the Iowa Bandmasters Magazine in the fall of 1988. Kevin was recognized by Morningside College as the Area Music Educator of the Year. His bands have consistently been recognized as outstanding in both Marching and Concert band competitions. His jazz bands have been recognized as the best in their class at numerous Iowa Jazz Championships.

Guest conductor for the middle school honor band is Lori Linder. Mrs. Linder is a graduate of Morningside College and taught instrumental music for four years for West Monona, five years for the Anthon-Oto, and two years for Eagle Grove. She currently is in her eighth year as Director of Elementary Bands for the Westwood CSD in Sloan.

Mrs. Linder has served as an adjudicator, flute clinician and guest conductor throughout Northwest Iowa. As an active member of the Iowa Bandmasters Association, she has served as both the district and statewide chairman of the Elementary Band Affairs committee. She is currently the principal flutist in the Sioux City Symphony Orchestra and maintains a studio of private flute students.
