Droessler wins district title: Romualdo, Huffman take seconds to advance
Storm Lake High's seniors came through here Saturday at the District 2 wrestling meet in Fort Dodge.
Senior heavyweight Jake Droessler emerged the overall district champions while at 145 pounds. SHLH's senior George Romualdo took second and qualified for state.
Also, Tornado wrestler Dustin Huffman, a 130-pound junior, took second in that weight division.
All three wrestlers qualified for the Class 3A Iowa State Meet, which will be held Thursday through Saturday in Des Moines.
"Overall, we were pleased with our performance on the day," said SL wrestling coach Ty Seaman. "There are always some matches that you would like a chance to re-wrestle but that doesn't happen."
In the team competition, Fort Dodge dominated the meet, finishing with 265 points to 201 for Marshalltown and 163 for Mason City. As a team, the Tornadoes finished sixth with 101 points, beating both Ames and Denison.
"Jacob had a great day and wrestled very well, and George and Dustin did what they needed to get through," added Seaman. "We need to set our sites on winning some matches in Des Moines and getting on the award stand."
Droessler got a first round bye in the heavyweight division, then had two close matches. In the second round, he defeated Jaime Nunez of Marshalltown via fall at 4 minutes, 26 seconds. In the championship match, Droessler won a 3-1 decision over Mike Doran of Boone. With the two wins, Droessler upped his season's mark to 26-10.
Romualdo had an easy pin in just 12 seconds in his first match, but went to overtime in his second-round match, beating Riley Lindner of Fort Dodge, 8-6. Romualdo was up 6-4 late in the third period only to see Lindner notch a reversal to force overtime. Romualdo won the match shortly into the overtime period with a reversal.
Huffman was impressive in his first two matches, beating Matt Kuster of Boone via fall in the opening round. In the second round, Huffman decisioned Zach Thompson of Mason City, 4-2.
In the championship match, Huffman lost to Joe DeMarc of Ames, 7-5.
Meanwhile, at 135 pounds, sophomore Tony Bedel just missed making state, taking third place. Just the top two finishers qualify for the state meet.
Bedel won his first match, lost his second and pinned Nick Boulware of Fort Dodge in 33 seconds in the match for third place.
The Tornadoes also had two fourth place finishes. Freshman Kelly Evans took fourth at 103 pounds after winning his opening round match, the first round of the consolation round and then lost in the match for third place.
Also, at 125 pounds, sophomore Adam Kelly took fourth place.
In addition, sophomore Brice Beal took sixth-place as did junior Marc Wiley.
"The kids wrestled hard and won some big matches," added Seaman. "We have a young team and with some hard work during the off-season, we hope to improve and be a better team next season."
