Dances With Buffalo: The thrill of the hunt

Monday, November 20, 2000

Dean Magnussen and his wife Lois of Sioux Rapids recently ventured to Triple U Buffalo Ranch near Pierre, S.D. to take part in a buffalo hunt.

An avid sportsman, Magnussen has been big game hunting in several parts of the U.S. and outside the country, including tracking antelope in Wyoming, elk in Colorado, bear in Canada, mule deer in Wyoming and havelina in Arizona.

When he read about the buffalo hunts at the ranch in South Dakota in a magazine, he knew this was something he wanted to do.

The ranch, where the movie "Dances With Wolves" was filmed, has 3,500 buffalo roaming the 60,000 acres of land.

Guided hunts are held annually to thin the bull herds and interested big gamesmen can choose to hunt for just the meat or in Magnussen's case, for the trophy as well.

In order to sell the meat of the buffalo, blood tests are conducted to detect disease. Once this is done, the cows and calves are separated from the bulls, who are then sent out to roam the prairie.
