With cold weather comes the time to get into the holiday spirit. Jan Peterson is doing just that as she's pulled out boxes of decorations and placed her Christmas tree in the living room.
Peterson, who owns the Garden Gate in Alta, has put her home of this year's Tour of Homes to be held in Alta on Dec. 3. The Alta Chamber of Commerce organizes this popular winter event.
"I have a time limit this year and I figured I should get started or I'm not going to make it," Peterson said. "I really enjoy decorating for the holidays when I have the time."
Peterson will decorate her new home on West Links Drive for only the third time and says it's even more fun for her to decorate because it's a new home.
"Christmas time is one time you can over-decorate your home and it still looks O.K.," Peterson said. "I've had many people tell me that their own homes look so bare after the holidays."
Over the years, Peterson has learned how to make her decorating a lot easier on herself.
"I've learned to mark every box because I never remember from year to year where I've placed things," Peterson said. "I mark the boxes by room. If it goes on the mantle, I mark it mantle."
Peterson begins her decorating by placing her 9 1/2 foot slim Christmas tree in her main room. Peterson's husband, Don, places the lights on the tree and then she begins the decorating.
"My husband can go crazy with the lights," Peterson said. "I don't think he ever really notices the decorations though."
