High honors for Pilot
The Storm Lake Pilot-Tribune has again swept many of the top honors in the Iowa Newspaper Association awards ceremony held in Des Moines Friday night.
The newspaper earned General Excellence honors, which it has done numerous times over the past decade, recognizing outstanding overall achievement in journalism.
Added to the Pilot's trophy case will be 17 INA Better Newspaper Awards, including seven first-place plaques in statewide competition. The Pilot also recently won nine major awards in the 2004 Associated Press statewide competition.
At the INA ceremony, Pilot-Tribune Editor Dana Larsen was honored with awards for Master Columnist, Best Editorial Writing and Best Sports Columnist.
The newspaper also received first place awards for Best News Story and Best Feature Story, as well as first place in the Community Service category, which includes efforts such as Mr. Goodfellow and Adopt-A-Family which raised many thousands of dollars worth of food and warm clothing for needy families.
The Pilot's "The Progress Reports" special edition was named the first place Best Special Section statewide. The newspaper was also cited with first place for Best Editorial Page.
The Pilot claimed honors in Best News Photo, Best Sports Section, Coverage of Agriculture, Coverage of Local Government, Best Promotion, Best Advertising Series, Best Agricultural Advertising, and Best Multi-Published Special Section.
The Pilot's sister newspapers, the Spencer Daily Reporter and the Dickinson County News, each also won General Excellence honors in their respective classes.
