Budget concerns put an end to SL Police Citizens Academy

Thursday, January 15, 2004

The Storm Lake Police Department announces that the 2004 Citizen's Academy has been canceled.

Due to concerns about cutting operational costs and pending additional cuts to the Police Department's budget based on constraints placed on the City's Budget by the Iowa Legislature, and in order to take every step available to keep officers on the street patrolling and answering calls, Public Safety Director Mark Prosser has canceled the Citizen's Academy.

By canceling the academy, salary and overtime costs will be saved in case it's needed later on in the fiscal year.

Prosser says, "It's unfortunate that we've had to cancel this successful program but in this current time of operational budget cuts and fiscal uncertainty we have no choice." Prosser adds, "At this point we're evaluating every program and process and we're bracing for the probability of additional cuts to our public safety budgets in the upcoming fiscal year."

The Police Department is committed to reviving the Citizens Academy as soon as the fiscal outlook for the City of Storm Lake improves.

If you have any questions contact Mark Prosser at 732-8010.
