The Storm Lake Police Department is accepting applications from citizens interested in attending their annual Citizen's Academy.
The academy is designed to provide citizens with in-depth information about the police department, its operation, training, diverse functions and more. The faculty of the academy is made up of Storm Lake Police Department paid and volunteer staff. The academy is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, February 17, at 6:30 p.m. The classes will be held at the Storm Lake Police Department located at 401 East Milwaukee Avenue. The classes will meet every Tuesday evening from, 6:30 - 9:30 p.m. over 12 weeks. Culmination is scheduled for Tuesday, May 11.
The weekly classes are designed to look at different topics each week, from drugs to gangs to prevention strategies. There is open discussion, hands-on opportunities and various demonstrations. Applications may be picked up and returned at the Storm Lake Police Department. All applications must be submitted no later than February 9. Letters of invitation are being sent out to many civic organizations and major employers within the city.
Class size is limited to 18 people. If you apply and are not chosen to attend the academy class you will be placed on a waiting list for next year. Background checks will be conducted on all applicants. You must be 18 years of age to apply. There is no charge.
