Earl M. Welty, age 69, of Nemaha, passed away on Thursday, December 11, 2003, at the Loring Hospital in Sac City following an extended illness. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, December 18, at 10:30 a.m. at the Nemaha Methodist Church with Russ Davis and Pastor Karl Schiltz officiating. There will be a private family burial at the Nemaha Cemetery at a later date. The Sliefert ~ Asmus Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Earl Melville Welty was born the son of Melville and Maurine (Test) Welty on September 12, 1934, in Spirit Lake. He grew up in Varina and in 1949, they moved to Pocahontas. Earl graduated from Pocahontas High School in 1953. Earl enlisted in the United States Army on November 18, 1954, and served his country until he was honorably discharged on November 6, 1956.

When Earl returned home, he began farming and later went into trucking. On January 25, 1984, Earl was united in marriage to Shirley Dykstra in Spencer. He was blessed to be the father of Francis and Michele and worked hard to provide a good life for his family. Earl retired from trucking in 2003 because of his health.

Earl was a member of Nemaha Methodist Church. He loved trucking and took great pride in his truck. When he wasn't driving it, he spent time polishing it and keeping it in top shape. In his spare time, Earl loved watching NASCAR racing and westerns on T.V. and enjoyed reading a good western pocket book. He was a hunter and collected guns and knives that he used in target practice. Earl was especially fond of his dog, Sparky and his daughter's dog, C.J. But, what he cherished most of all, was spending time with his family who loved him very much. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Earl is survived by his wife, Shirley of Nemaha; his son, Francis Welty and Elaine of Pocahontas; his daughter, Michele Welty of Sioux City; three grandchildren: Tony Welty, Desiree Welty and Taylor Welty, all of Laurens; his sister, Patricia Hawkins and her husband, Norris of Le Mars and many other loving relatives and friends.

Earl was preceded in death by his parents, Melville and Maurine Welty.
