West Lyon winning streak ends in playoffs

Thursday, November 9, 2000

The streak is over and so is West Lyon's hope of winning a third consecutive state championship in football.

No. 2 Southern Calhoun beat third-ranked West Lyon 36-14 Monday night in the quarterfinals of the Class 1A playoffs, ending the Wildcats' winning streak at 34 games.

West Lyon won the last two Class 2A titles and had not lost since the second game of the 1998 season.

Ryan Kock scored twice on short runs and caught a touchdown pass to lead Southern Calhoun, which advances to the semifinals for the second straight year. Wesley Beschorner threw the touchdown pass and finished 12-of-16 for 173 yards. He also scored on an 11-yard run.

With West Lyon's loss, West Bend-Mallard remained the only state champion from 1999 still in the running for another title. West Bend-Mallard, seeking a third straight Class A championship, advanced to the semifinals with a 20-12 victory over IKM (Manilla).
