On Saturday, Nov, 4, the first annual Latino Leadership awards banquet was held at the Richey Ballroom, Iowa State Memorial Union, in Iowa City.
The purpose of the awards, sponsored by the Governor's Commission on Latino Affairs, was to recognize and honor the contributions of individuals and organizations that have made a lasting impact on Latino communities in Iowa.
The Commission sent out hundreds of letters to community leaders across Iowa requesting nominations for this prestigious award. From the hundred plus nominations received, 20 finalists were chosen and sent on to the awards committee. Four final awards were presented at the banquet, with keynote speaker Lt. Governor Sally Pederson taking the opportunity to congratulate the four winners and encouraging all communities to follow this lead.
The four recipients included Jaime Quintanilla of Storm Lake, Sister Irene Munoz of Ottumwa, Brent Grinna of Postville and Ms. Maris De Los Angeles Torres of Dubuque.
Quintanilla was nominated by Bob and Nella O'Brien for his efforts in creating a successful social contact forum through soccer for the Latino community of Storm Lake and other communities with new Latino populations.
